Not all of us can go to a great school willing to make alternate reality games part of the freshman experience. And with the price of education going through the roof (seriously, I just looked at tuition/room/board costs at Wheaton College, where I went for $18k per year in 1996) and everything else about the US economy crashing, who’s to say a college loan bubble isn’t the next thing to go to hell?
Shit’s just not worth it, especially now that a college degree doesn’t guarantee you a high-paying job, or any job, for that matter. So what can you do? Turns out, you can do a lot.
MIT and Stanford are offering course materials online for free. OpenCourseWare at MIT has been operating for years, but did you know about M.I.T.x? Did you know that Stanford is offering classes in Cryptography, Anatomy, Comp Sci, and more online for free as well?
You don’t have to go back to school. You can homeschool yourself through college and save a shitload of money doing it. Build a portfolio and some experience working on awesome projects that interest you, and you’re far better off sans degree than that kid with a $200,000 liberal arts degree when it comes to finding a job.Related: Popular:
