Finally, a hotel where you can luxuriate with all the oceanic class of a modern Titanic with the location of an underwater drilling rig set in the cool waters of the Persian Gulf.

To be fair, it actually sounds pretty cool. Not only does a stay at a Water Discus Underwater Hotel include 360-degree views above and below water (down to about 11 yards) transportation is provided by both helicopter and personal submersibles.

Deep Ocean Technology is particularly dedicated to developing autonomous unmanned submersibles. Currently, they are intended mainly for guests staying at Water Discus Hotels. In the future, however, they will become very useful also for research, underwater archeology and mining industry.

So on the one hand, we have a grand retreat the likes of which is best accessible via some of the most exotic forms of transportation mankind has ever known, and on the other we have the premise for some of the worst science-fiction calamities ever imagined. (more…)

Can’t sleep? Don’t take a powder.

You’re better off staring at the walls, drinking warm sheep, counting milk, and trying like hell not to watch the clock if you can’t sleep:

Sleeping pills might actually be worse for you than not sleeping. A recent study published in the online journal BMJ Open suggests that even moderate consumption of sleeping pills can increase mortality 3-4 times.

Which is relieving, mostly because I can’t afford sleeping pills. I tend to get up and read or do the dishes or whatever if I don’t drop off on schedule. Besides, with side-effects like diarrhea constipated ear-itching dizziness, I’d rather skip the Ambien and die less in the bargain.

Honduras is terrifying

Just out of frame: a pile of bodies. (img by Ben Chaney)

According to the UN and WaPo, Honduras rocketed to the top of the murder charts in 2010. The cause: drug trade expansion and the entrance of Mexican cartels as it gets harder for them to operate in Mexico.

Researchers caution that the surge in killings here cannot be attributed entirely to narcotics trafficking. As in Ciudad Juarez, drug-fueled violence appears to have fostered an overall climate of impunity, in which bullets settle the slightest dispute and anyone can literally get away with murder. Members of Congress want to see whether White Gun, like Fast and Furious, lost track of firearms that ended up with Mexican criminals.

In the late summer of 2010, the ATF agent leading the failed Fast and Furious gun-smuggling operation in Arizona flew to Mexico City to help coordinate cross-border investigations of U.S. weapons used by Mexican drug cartels.

Hope A. MacAllister wanted access to police and military vaults for American weapons recovered by Mexican authorities in raids and at crime scenes. She especially was interested in firearms from another ATF investigation, code-named White Gun, that she was running.

Now members of Congress who have spent months scrutinizing the Fast and Furious debacle are seeking to determine whether White Gun was another weapons investigation gone wrong.

“Apparently guns got away again,” said one source close to the investigation, led by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista) and Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa). “How many got into Mexico, who knows?” (more…)

By Damian Mann, Mail Tribune

Concealed handgun owners with medical marijuana cards will be allowed to keep their licenses following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to hear Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winter’s legal challenge that asserted U.S. law trumps Oregon law.

Gold Hill resident Cynthia Willis, 54, said putting the case behind her is a victory for the rights of medical marijuana users throughout Oregon.

“Just because we’re patients doesn’t mean we don’t have real lifestyles and rights like everyone else,” she said. (more…)

Zeta soldiers launched attack in Houston

1 Zeta soldiers launched attack in Houston

Four suspects are in custody charged with capital murder in connection with a shooting Monday on Hollister near Bourgeois in northwest Harris County. That shooting left one person dead and an undercover HCSO deputy wounded. Officers with several local and federal agencies were conducting surveillance on an 18-wheeler carrying an undetermined quantity of marijuana when several suspects in vehicles pulled up to the truck and opened fire. Officers engaged in gunfire with the suspects. That exchange resulted in the undercover officer being shot in the leg and the death of the occupant in the 18-wheeler. (Harris Co. Sheriff's Office)

By Dane Schiller, Houston Chronicle

The mission was supposed to be a textbook “controlled delivery” – a routine trap by law enforcement officers using a secret operative posing as a truck driver to bust drug traffickers when their narcotics are delivered to a rendezvous point.

Instead, things spun out of control. Shortly before the marijuana delivery was to be made Monday afternoon, three sport-utility vehicles carrying Zetas cartel gunmen seemingly came out of nowhere and cut off the tractor tailer rig as it rumbled through northwest Harris County, sources told the Houston Chronicle.
