Tarantino: ‘Disrespectful’ to link violence to movies

django unchained quentin tarantino movie image set photo 450x450 Tarantino: ‘Disrespectful’ to link violence to movies

I have no context for this picture because I don’t have three hours straight to watch the new Django movie. Seriously.

tl;dr it’s the video games’ fault. Just kidding.

GROSS: So I just have to ask you, is it any less fun after like the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, like, do you ever go through a period where you lose your taste for movie violence? And movie violence is not real violence, I understand the difference. But still, are there times when it just is not a fun movie experience for you – either to be making it that way or to be in the audience for something like that?

TARANTINO: Not for me.

GROSS: So it’s so completely separate, that the reality of violence doesn’t affect at all your feelings about making or viewing very violent or sadistic…

TARANTINO: Sadistic? I don’t know. I do know what, I don’t know. I think, you know, you’re putting a judgment on it.

GROSS: No, no, no…

TARANTINO: You’re putting a judgment on it.

GROSS: The characters are sadistic. The characters are sadistic. I’m not talking about, you know, the filmmaker. I’m talking about the characters. I mean, the characters are undeniably sadistic.

TARANTINO: Mm-hmm. When you say after the tragedy, what do you mean by that exactly? (more…)

10 years of Civ II

civ2 450x366 10 years of Civ II

“This front line hasn’t moved in 1000 years…” (img by Lycerius)

This is truly amazing:

I’ve been playing the same game of Civ II for 10 years. Though long outdated, I grew fascinated with this particular game because by the time Civ III was released, I was already well into the distant future. I then thought that it might be interesting to see just how far into the future I could get and see what the ramifications would be. Naturally I play other games and have a life, but I often return to this game when I’m not doing anything and carry on. The results are as follows.

-The world is a hellish nightmare of suffering and devastation.

-There are 3 remaining super nations in the year 3991 A.D, each competing for the scant resources left on the planet after dozens of nuclear wars have rendered vast swaths of the world uninhabitable wastelands.

-The ice caps have melted over 20 times (somehow) due primarily to the many nuclear wars. As a result, every inch of land in the world that isn’t a mountain is inundated swamp land, useless to farming. Most of which is irradiated anyway. (more…)

America’s drone sickness

Drone Firing 450x337 America’s drone sickness

Targeting the al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network, US missiles killed 12 people in lower Kurram Agency in two strikes just minutes apart on Monday, security officials said. (img by the Express Tribune)

This headline and first paragraph from today’s Washington Post scoop by Greg Miller speaks volumes about so many things:

washpost 450x177 America’s drone sickness

There are many evils in the world, but extinguishing people’s lives with targeted, extra-judicial killings, when you don’t even know their names, based on “patterns” of behavior judged from thousands of miles away, definitely ranks high on the list. Although the Obama White House has not approved of this request from CIA Director David Petraeus, these so-called “signature strikes” that “allow the agency to hit targets based solely on intelligence indicating patterns of suspicious behavior” are already robustly used in Pakistan — having been started by George Bush in 2008 and aggressively escalated by Barack Obama. There is much to say on this new report, but in order for me to focus on three discrete points, permit me to highly recommend two superb articles that highlight other vital aspects of this policy: (1) this article from my Salon colleague Jefferson Morley this morning on why this form of drone-targeting is pure American Terrorism, and (2) this essay from Chris Floyd about a recently published Rolling Stone article by Michael Hastings on Obama’s love of drones and secret wars and how the military’s slang for drone victims — “bug splat” — reflects the sociopathic mindset that drive them. Video shows officers beating motorist in diabetic shock

By Mike Blasky, the Las Vegas Review-Journal

Adam Greene is on his stomach as a pack of police officers pile on him, driving their knees into his back and wrenching his arms and legs. One officer knees him in the ribs; another kicks him in the face.

“Stop resisting,” officers on the video yell, but Greene, his face pushed into the pavement, hasn’t resisted. He doesn’t even move — maybe can’t move — because he’s gone into diabetic shock caused by low blood sugar.

The video, recorded more than a year ago by a police car dashboard camera, was released Tuesday by Greene’s lawyers. The same night, the Henderson City Council approved a settlement of $158,500 for Greene. His wife received $99,000 from Henderson, which is just under the minimum amount that requires council approval. (more…)

Honduras is terrifying

Just out of frame: a pile of bodies. (img by Ben Chaney)

According to the UN and WaPo, Honduras rocketed to the top of the murder charts in 2010. The cause: drug trade expansion and the entrance of Mexican cartels as it gets harder for them to operate in Mexico.

Researchers caution that the surge in killings here cannot be attributed entirely to narcotics trafficking. As in Ciudad Juarez, drug-fueled violence appears to have fostered an overall climate of impunity, in which bullets settle the slightest dispute and anyone can literally get away with murder. Mugger miscalculates, gets ass kicked

I'm too dumb to feel shame. (img by Anthony Miranda)

Chicago – A convicted felon chose the wrong victim when he tried to rob an ultimate fighting champion Friday night on the Southwest Side and ended up with two black eyes and a gunshot wound to the ankle.

Critical tip for when you’re playing the mugging game: it’s maybe better to judge victims on foot instead of in vehicles… It’s hard to tell if the guy behind the wheel is a UFC fighter or a Sikh strongman who will just bend your knife with his face. (more…)
