## How I matched seven products to four buyer profiles

Notice what is not on that list: brand, and the number printed largest on the packaging.

Two things separate this roll from the rest of the set. It carries the highest stated R-value of any thin product here at R17, and it is foil on both faces rather than foil on one. That second point matters more than it sounds. Everything else here is a reflective sheet. This is bulk fiberglass, 2-1/4in thick and 15in wide, unbacked and rated R-7 by RecPro. The listed dimensions are 0.04 x 792 x 15 in, and 792 inches is 66ft of run, the longest single piece in this comparison.

The 15in width is the tell. RecPro built this for RV framing on roughly 16in centers, where a 15in batt friction-fits between studs without compression. That is how batt insulation is supposed to work, and it is why depth is non-negotiable: squash it into a 1in gap and you have paid for loft you then destroyed.

I have placed this last because it does a different job, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. It goes over the inside of your entry door, not inside a wall.

It is here because the door is usually the weakest thermal point in a trailer, and no amount of foil in the sidewalls fixes a thin hollow door with a marginal seal. ## How much roll do you need for a trailer wall?

Do this before you buy anything, because the wrong quantity is the most common expensive mistake in this category.

- Measure each wall's length and height in feet. Multiply for square feet.
- Add both sidewalls together. Add the front wall if you are doing it.
- Add 15% for overlap at studs and for cuts around windows and wiring.
- Divide by the coverage of your chosen roll.

## What the listings do not tell you about R-values

The numbers on these listings are not measuring the same thing, and that is the trap in this category.

RecPro's R-7 describes bulk fiberglass loft, the traditional way R-value is assigned. SmartSHIELD's R17 and R15 are assembly figures for a reflective system that depends on an adjacent air gap. Take away the gap by sandwiching the sheet tight between skin and paneling, and the reflective component of that number has nothing to work with. This is why R17 from a 5mm sheet is not a contradiction and not a lie, but it is also not comparable to R17 of foam board.

Three of the seven products here state no R-value at all: AGHITG, dojobkinb and the ESUDNT door cover. That is worth noticing rather than assuming a figure.

The practical consequence for the best insulation for trailer walls is simple. Build in an air gap, even a thin one, on at least one face of any reflective sheet. Furring strips, the depth of the stud itself, or the natural gap behind a dimpled bubble surface all count. Install it flat and squashed and you are left with the conductive value of a few millimetres of foam.

## Foam core, bubble core or fiberglass batt?

Three constructions appear in this set, and they fail in different ways.

For most trailer walls I would start with foam core. The compression resistance is what makes it survive being fastened and then forgotten behind paneling for a decade.

## The verdict

The SmartSHIELD -5mm R17 roll is the best insulation for trailer walls for most people, and the reason is geometric before it is thermal. Trailer stud cavities are shallow. A 5mm sheet fits, a 2-1/4in batt does not, and no R-value survives being compressed to a third of its intended thickness.
